Une prothèse amovible partielle remplace une partie seulement des dents sur une mâchoire. Elle peut être insérée ou retirée à volonté.
• Les prothèses entièrement en résine
Grâce à une empreinte réalisée au cabinet, le prothésiste réalise une plaque en résine rose, dans laquelle sont intégrées des dents artificielles en résine ou céramique. Des crochets sont positionnés de façon stratégique au niveau de la prothèse pour la stabiliser et la retenir pendant la mastication et l'élocution. L'appareil s'appuie uniquement sur les gencives. Ces prothèses en résine sont faciles et rapides à réaliser. Elles sont également peu onéreuses et servent souvent de prothèses transitoires.
• Les prothèses à châssis métallique (ou stellite)
Ce sont des appareils plus élaborés, qui permettent de mieux préserver la gencive et les dents restantes. En général, deux empreintes successives sont nécessaires, à l'issue desquelles le prothésiste réalise une armature métallique. Elle s'apparente à un squelette qui sert d'échafaudage pour le soutien de la résine rose et des dents artificielles. Grâce au châssis métallique, ces prothèses peuvent s'appuyer non seulement sur la gencive mais aussi sur les dents, ce qui répartit mieux les forces. Les dents naturelles restantes, en contact avec les crochets, peuvent être légèrement taillées pour stabiliser l'appareil, voire couronnées si elles sont fragiles.
• Les crochets sur les dents
Certains crochets situés sur les dents de devant peuvent être disgracieux. Il est possible de réaliser des crochets plus esthétiques ou bien d'utiliser des systèmes plus sophistiqués appelés attachements, qui permettent de les supprimer tout en garantissant la stabilité de l'appareil.
