Les prothèses dentaires servent à remplacer soit une partie de dent, soit une ou plusieurs dents. Il existe différents types de prothèse.
L'empreinte dentaire
L'empreinte est la phase préalable à la réalisation de la prothèse dentaire qui sera fabriquée sur mesure par le prothésiste selon les prescriptions du chirurgien-dentiste. Dans certains cas, plusieurs empreintes sont nécessaires. Entre-temps, vous bénéficiez d'une prothèse provisoire afin de protéger la dent et de garder le sourire avant la pose de la prothèse définitive.
Suivant votre situation, différents types de prothèses dentaires peuvent être envisagés :
Les prothèses dentaires fixées aux dents
Une dent abîmée peut être reconstruite avec des prothèses dentaires fixes.
Il existe plusieurs types de prothèses fixes utilisés selon les besoins :
- Une couronne dentaire prothétique pour remplacer l'ensemble de la partie visible de la dent. La couronne dentaire recouvre alors toute la dent et la consolide.
- Un inlay pour remplacer une petite partie de la dent.
- Un onlay qui est une couronne dentaire partielle.
Lorsqu'il manque une ou plusieurs dents, elles peuvent être remplacées par un bridge (ou pont dentaire). Le bridge est fixé aux dents voisines par un inlay, un onlay ou une couronne.
Les prothèses dentaires amovibles
Ce sont des prothèses que l'on peut mettre et retirer comme on le souhaite. Elles peuvent être partielles ou totales :
- Une prothèse dentaire amovible partielle ne remplace que certaines dents. Elle prend appui sur la gencive et sur les dents restantes à l'aide de crochets.
- Une prothèse dentaire amovible complète remplace toutes les dents d'une mâchoire et s'appuie simplement sur la gencive.
Les prothèses dentaires sur implants
Il existe deux types de prothèses sur implant :
- Les prothèses dentaires fixes sur implants : ce sont des couronnes dentaires ou des bridges directement vissés ou scellés sur les implants dentaires.
- Les prothèses dentaires amovibles sur implants : ce sont des prothèses dentaires amovibles partielles ou complètes, stabilisées par des implants dentaires au moyen de systèmes d'attaches qui ressemblent souvent à de petits boutons-pression.
